What is a personal assistant and their role

A personal assistant (PA) helps someone live independently by providing care and support tailored to their individual needs. This can include help at home and in the community.

Roles and responsibilities

As a personal assistant, you may:

  • Support with personal care such as:
    • Getting in and out of bed
    • Bathing
    • Dressing
    • Toileting
    • Preparing meals
  • Help with daily living tasks to maintain independence.
  • Enable access to community activities, for example:
    • Shopping
    • Pursuing hobbies
    • Attending support groups

Your role is flexible and based on what matters most to the person you support.
