Understanding the Integrated Review
The Integrated Review at Age Two brings together early years practitioners, health visitors, and parents or carers to create a complete picture of a child’s development. It helps identify any needs early and ensures timely support.
Purpose of the Integrated Review
This review aims to:
- Improve multi‑agency collaboration and information sharing
- Reduce duplication of checks and reports
- Provide consistent, clear feedback to parents and carers
- Offer a whole-child view of development
- Identify support needs early and improve school readiness
Statutory Requirements
- Progress Check at Age Two
Practitioners must review a child’s progress between ages two and three and provide a written summary focused on the prime development areas (communication, physical, personal, and social skills) - Health & Development Review (Ages 2–2½)
Conducted under the Healthy Child Programme, this review uses the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to assess areas such as communication, motor skills, and problem-solving. It also covers dental health, accident prevention, sleep, toilet training, and parent guidance
Practitioner Tips
- Communicate openly with families—invite questions or concerns, with their consent to liaise with other professionals
- Complete the Progress Check once you know the child well. Ideally, this should precede the health visitor’s review
- Involve parents and carers in finalising the summary—ensure they have a voice in the process
- Encourage parents to share their child’s Personal Child Health Record (PCHR or "red book") at entry and throughout their time in your setting
- Practitioners should be familiar with the PCHR (see link above) as well as the health and development two year review from the Department for Health
Next Steps
Use the insights from the Integrated Review to:
- Share development observations with health visitors and other professionals
- Identify areas where the child may need additional support
- Plan purposeful next steps to back the child’s wellbeing and readiness for school
