Register of structures and features

Explains shared responsibilities for flood risk management under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

Last updated: 3rd December

Under section 21 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, we in our role as a lead local flood authority (LLFA) are required to keep a register of structures or features which it considers to have a significant effect on flood risk within Staffordshire.

We’ve been working to identify drainage and flood defence structures and will keep updating this important information.

From this list, we’ll select the structures that have the biggest impact on flood risk. These will be added to our asset register.

As the majority of the data is owned by third parties and is often out of date, we are unable to release the information online. If you would like to view the asset register then please contact us for more information.

Planning for floods

Once the asset register is nearly complete, it will help create response plans. These plans will show where key drainage and flood defence assets are located in each area.

They will also outline who is responsible for what, and what actions different response teams need to take. The plans can highlight places that need regular maintenance.

Designation of third-party assets

Schedule 1 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 grants us the power to designate features which can have an effect on flood risk.

Designated assets can be natural or man-made (like embankments or garden walls). You need our formal permission to change, remove, or replace them.

We decide whether to designate features on a case-by-case basis, considering the flood risk to nearby properties.
