Take care of yourself this winter

Every day self‑care tips, medicines and where to get help if you’re unwell.

Last updated: 23rd December

Self‑care basics

  • Keep a small supply of over‑the‑counter medicines at home (pain relief, cold remedies, oral rehydration salts). Ask your pharmacist for advice if you take other medicines.
  • Stay hydrated, eat regular warm meals and snacks, and aim for steady routines (sleep, gentle activity, fresh air when you can).
  • If you have a long‑term condition, follow your care plan and keep prescriptions up to date.

Pharmacy first

Your local pharmacist can advise on coughs, colds and many minor illnesses. They’ll tell you if you should see a GP. (See NHS links on our Protect your health this winter page.)

Know where to get help

  • Use NHS 111 online or by phone for urgent advice that isn’t life‑threatening.
  • If symptoms worsen quickly or you feel very unwell, seek medical help promptly.

Mental wellbeing

Shorter days and cold weather can affect mood. Visit our Mental health and wellbeing pages for self‑help tips, urgent contacts and local support.
