Since 2000, hedgehog populations have plummeted by up to 75% in parts of the countryside. They are particularly vulnerable this time of year as they start to head into hibernation.
The county council is asking residents to take simple steps keep Bonfire Night celebrations safe and enjoyable for everyone.
- Build bonfires on the day you plan to light them.
- Check piles thoroughly before lighting.
- Put up barriers around bonfires.
- Light from one side to give any hidden animals a chance to escape.
- Consider raised fire pits or attend a professional display instead.
Fireworks can also cause severe distress and hearing damage to pets, livestock and wildlife with frightened animals often attempting to flee, leading to injury or death. Residents are encouraged to choose silent fireworks, keep animals indoors and consider their communities around them.
It is illegal to set off fireworks in public spaces, including Staffordshire’s country parks, and offenders can face unlimited fines or up to six months in prison.
Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said:
“Bonfire Night is one of those lovely evenings that brings people together, but it can be a scary time for animals. A quick check before lighting your bonfire could save a hedgehog’s life, and choosing to attend a professional display is both safer and reduces disturbances to pets and wildlife.
“Let’s all do our bit to celebrate safely. Take care, look out for our furry and feathered friends, and leave the countryside just as we found it.”
- Only buy CE-marked fireworks and store them securely.
- Keep fireworks away from trees, fences and buildings.
- Never return to a lit firework.
- Avoid using fireworks on balconies or while under the influence of alcohol.
- If using sparklers, keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish.
- Supervise children and keep pets indoors.
