In England a young person should be engaged in education, training or employment until they are 18 years old.
This does not mean a young person must stay in school. There are many options available such as:
- Further education
- Sixth form colleges
- Alternative training providers
- Traineeships
- Apprenticeships

16-19 bursary
If a looked after child or young person who has recently left authority care progresses into further education or training, they will be eligible for a 16 to 19 guaranteed bursary fund providing they are:
- at least 16 and under 19 on 31 August
- will be studying at a publicly funded school or college
- or be on an unpaid training course.
They must also meet residency requirements to be eligible for the funding support.
The educational provider will be able to advise on the application process, usually a letter is required from the social worker or personal advisor of the young person, stating their care status.
The funding can be used to support with essential course equipment, pupil transport and lunch on the days in college or training.
