Road markings

Road markings help keep everyone safe. They guide drivers and pedestrians and show where restrictions apply. Markings can wear down over time because of traffic and weather. If you see faded markings, you can report them online.

Types of Road Markings

  • Double yellow lines – No parking at any time.
  • Single yellow lines – No parking at certain times (check nearby signs).
  • Disabled parking bays – For Blue Badge holders only. You can apply for a bay online.
  • Access protection markings (H-bars) – Advisory markings in front of driveways or dropped kerbs.
  • SLOW markings – Warn drivers about hazards like bends or junctions.
  • Speed limit markings – Remind drivers of the speed limit, often with coloured surfacing near villages or schools.
  • Give Way markings – At junctions where drivers must give way.
  • Stop lines – At traffic lights or junctions where vehicles must stop.

Other markings include centre lines, zig-zags, and roundabout markings.

Reporting Problems

We check road markings during routine safety inspections. If you notice worn markings, report them online.

How We Deal With Worn Markings

  • Not all faded markings need urgent repainting. We follow safety criteria and tolerance levels.
  • If your report is low risk, it will be added to our planned lining schedule.
  • Lining work depends on weather and resources, so timescales can vary.

New Markings

Requests for new markings, such as disabled bays, are processed as quickly as possible. All markings follow the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) 2016.
