Weeds

Weed spraying

Weed spraying is part of routine highway maintenance. It helps prevent damage to roads and improves safety and visibility. It is not done to improve how an area looks.

One weed spraying treatment takes place between June and August each year:

  • Rural roads (speed limit 40mph and above): weeds along the kerb and channel are treated.
  • Urban roads (speed limit 30mph and below): we treat the kerb, channel and back of the pavement where there is a hard edge like a wall or fence, if weeds are present.

We use a mild chemical that only works on growing plants. Spraying is only done where weeds are visible. Rain after spraying can reduce how well it works. We do not carry out extra visits.

Some district and borough councils may spray weeds before cutting grass in urban areas, especially around street furniture, to avoid strimming.

Injurious weed control

We treat harmful weeds like Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed as part of a planned programme. These weeds are treated at known locations across Staffordshire.

If you see a large amount of harmful weeds on the highway, you can report it using report It. In most cases, we are already aware and have a treatment plan in place.
