Road safety in Staffordshire
Staffordshire has one of the safest county council road networks in the country. We welcome feedback from communities about road safety concerns.
All road safety decisions are based on objectively measured data, including:
- Traffic speeds
- Traffic volumes
- Road traffic collision data involving personal injury (reported to the police)
Visit the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership website for community-led initiatives
How are locations chosen for road safety improvements?
We monitor personal injury collisions reported on public roads to identify accident trends. Locations with a treatable pattern of incidents are prioritised for funding. Severity is considered, but patterns are key.
Collision data is provided by police officers and may include contributory factors such as driver error, vehicle failure, speed, intoxication, or environmental conditions.
Serious or fatal collisions may result in hazard notifications or Regulation 28 Reports from the coroner.
Accident investigation and prioritisation
- Annual and quarterly cluster site and route surveys are conducted
- Sites with the greatest proven need are treated first
- Mass action schemes may be funded for locations with 3–6 incidents over 3 years
Reporting speeding
Speeding concerns are investigated by the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership. They can also provide wheelie bin stickers to discourage speeding.
Requesting a speed limit change
Speed limits must be evidence-led and self-explaining. Reductions are only considered if supported by accident data and justified engineering measures.
Report concerns via Report It. Our Community Traffic Management Officers will investigate and may refer the issue to the Divisional Highway Programme.
Reporting road safety issues
Report issues such as layout concerns or accident risks via Report It. Each request is reviewed based on available data and infrastructure.
After You Report
You’ll receive an automated response explaining our position. If no supporting data exists, action is unlikely, but we will continue to monitor the location. Community concerns may be referred to the local County Councillor.
Requesting speed cameras
Fixed speed cameras are prioritised based on recent collision history. Community input is not part of this process.
Where fixed cameras are not justified, the SSRP may consider the location for mobile enforcement if criteria are met.
We continue to use Department for Transport criteria from the former National Safety Camera Programme to ensure effective use of enforcement resources.
Community speed initiatives
- Community concern speed enforcement locations
- Speed Indication Devices (SID)
- Community Speed Watch
We are reviewing our approach to better support community-owned measures in the future.
