A34 Highway Improvements, Stafford. Town Centre to Weeping Cross
What are we doing?
We will be carrying out maintenance and infrastructure improvements along the A34 Corridor, from Weeping Cross to the Town Centre.
The scheme includes road and transport improvements including road and bridge maintenance work, active travel, passenger transport and street lighting improvements on the A34, between Stafford Town Centre and the A34/A513 double traffic island junction at Weeping Cross.
Roads affected include A34 Lichfield Road, North Walls, Queensville Roundabout, Queensville, Radford Bank, Baswich Lane, Cannock Road and Weeping Cross.
The roadworks are planned to be carried out in eight phases. Works started in early June 2024 and are planned to be completed March 2026. Bus services will be affected between Queensville Roundabout and the Town Centre.

Upcoming traffic management measures
A34 Lichfield Road, Stafford
Fencing, footway patching and drainage cleansing works
Planned Start Date 26.01.26 for approximately 2 weeks
Fencing and footway patching works are to be completed on the approach to Queensville Bridge (out of town side)
On completion of works adjacent Queensville Bridge outstanding drain cleansing will be carried out adjacent Queensville Avenue
These works will be carried out using temporary traffic signals off peak between 09:30 – 15:30 Monday – Friday.
Queensville Bridge – Above deck works
Works to permanently extend the height of the parapet, and remove the current temporary fencing, have been arranged during Saturday night track possessions (closure of the rail tracks) on the following dates:
- 10/11th January 2026
- 24/25th January 2026
- 7/8th February 2026
- 21/22nd February 2026
- 7/8th March 2026 (contingency)
- 21/22nd March 2026 (contingency)
During these works temporary two-way traffic signals will be place over the bridge from 9pm – 8:30am to reduce the road to single lane running.

Phase 7b - Bridge Street - Lichfield Road (Gyratory) Construction 06/01/26 – 13/02/26
Advance works 06/01/26 – 13/02/26 for this phase.
- Upgraded Pedestrian and Cycle Crossing
- Bus Priority Measures between St. Leonard's Avenue & Bridge Street

- Contra flow cycle lane along White Lion Street
- Existing parking bays are to remain
For the traffic signal upgrade works temporary traffic signals will be in operation in lieu of permanent signals with footway works carried out with lane closures.

Phase 8 - North Walls (Gaolgate Street - South Walls) (Completed April 2025)
Advance works 17/02/26 – 21/04/26 for this phase.
What the work includes
- The project will deliver several improvements along Gaolgate Street and North Walls:
- A new shared‑use footway on North Walls (Access Road), including a 1.5 m kerbed build‑out.
- A reshaped traffic island near Stafford Bus Station.
- North Walls reduced to a single traffic lane with an advisory contraflow cycle lane towards the A34 Queensway.
- A priority change at the Malt Mill Lane junction to support traffic flow on North Walls.
- Conversion of the northern footway (opposite Malt Mill Lane) to shared use.
- A new two‑way segregated cycle track linking into the existing facility at North Walls and A34 Queensway.
- A shared cycling route across Gaolgate Street.
- Resurfacing of the raised area at the junction of North Walls and Malt Mill Lane.
- The work also includes site clearance, drainage works, earthworks, rebuilding sections of the planting bed, kerbing, new surfacing, traffic signs and road markings.
Traffic management
- To complete the work safely, we will put temporary traffic management in place.
- This will include:
- Road narrowing and temporary footpath diversions along North Walls.
- Full road closure and diversion on Gaolgate Street from 27 March to 8 April 2025.
- Road closure and diversion at North Walls / Malt Mill Lane junction on Sunday 13 April 2025.
- Road closure and diversion at North Walls / Queensway junction on Sunday 6 April 2025.
- Dates may change due to weather or site conditions. We will update this webpage if any adjustments are needed.
