Primary, junior and middle schools admissions

Who can apply?

Anyone with parental responsibility can apply for a school place. If parents are separated, we expect you to agree on school preferences before applying. We may ask for evidence of this agreement. We cannot intervene in disputes between parents.

When should I apply?

  • Secondary/high school (September 2026 entry): Applications open on 1 September 2025 and close on 31 October 2025.
  • Primary/middle school (September 2026 entry): Applications open on 1 November 2025 and close on 15 January 2026.

Why do I need to apply?

Children are not automatically allocated a school place. You must apply to ensure your child is considered for your preferred schools.

Will my child automatically transfer to the next school?

No. You must submit a new application for each school phase (e.g. infant to junior, primary to secondary).

What if I don’t apply?

If no application is received, your child will be allocated a place at a school with available spaces. This may not be your catchment school, and transport assistance may not be provided.

How do I find my catchment area school?

Check your catchment area. You must name the catchment school on your application to be considered for a place there. Admission is not guaranteed.

How many schools can I apply for?

You can name up to three schools. If you want to apply for more, contact the admissions team. All preferences are considered equally.

Should I list other preferences if I know the school I want?

Yes. If your preferred school cannot offer a place, listing other schools increases your chances of securing a suitable alternative.

Can I apply for schools outside Staffordshire?

Yes. If you live in Staffordshire, apply through Staffordshire County Council. We will share your application with other local authorities.

If you live outside Staffordshire, apply through your home authority.

How are places allocated?

Each school uses its own admission arrangements. All preferences are considered equally. If more than one school can offer a place, the highest-ranked preference will be allocated.

Are exceptional circumstances considered?

Some schools may consider exceptional circumstances. For community and voluntary controlled schools, hardship must be severe and supported by evidence. Check each school’s admission policy.

Do I need to provide extra information?

Some schools require supplementary forms or additional evidence (e.g. medical documents, baptism certificates). Submit these directly to the admissions team or the school.

What happens if I apply late?

Late applications may be considered after on-time applications. This could affect your chances of getting a preferred school. You still have the right to appeal or join a waiting list.

When will I get the outcome?

  • Secondary/high school: Offers sent on 2 March 2026
  • Primary/middle school: Offers sent on 16 April 2026

Online applicants will receive an email. Paper applicants will receive a letter by post.

Can I change my preferences?

Yes. Email admissions@staffordshire.gov.uk to make changes. Your application will be treated as late.

What if my child attends an independent school?

If you live in Staffordshire, apply online or by paper form. If you live outside Staffordshire, apply through your local authority.

What if my application is unsuccessful?

You can:

  • Join a waiting list (held until 31 December of the admission year)
  • Submit an appeal to an independent panel

What if I’ve just moved to the area?

Visit our in-year admissions page for guidance.

Is my child entitled to free school transport?

Children may be eligible if:

  • They attend their catchment or nearest school
  • The distance is over 3 miles
  • They meet low-income criteria

Check the School transport pages for full details.
