Aims of course
For Staffordshire residents aged 19+ (excluding Stoke-on-Trent), this course is ideal for those looking to develop further woodworking and tree science skills to support learning, future employment, or progression to further education.
Entry requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in woodworking, construction and tree science would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.
Course content
For Staffordshire residents aged 19+ (excluding Stoke-on-Trent), this STEM-focused course develops practical woodworking and tree science skills, emphasising measurement, design, and sustainable practices. Ideal for supporting learning, daily life, employment, or further education.
How you will learn?
You will engage in face-to-face learning delivered in both classroom and outdoor environments. The course incorporates a variety of learning styles—including hands-on practical activities, visual demonstrations, group discussions, and individual reflection—to support different preferences and enhance understanding. This blended approach encourages active participation, collaboration, and real-world application of skills.

We provide tailored support to help you succeed in woodworking and tree science. Whether you need assistance with technical skills, understanding measurements, or using tools safely, our experienced tutors will guide you. Support is also available for literacy, numeracy, and health and safety awareness to ensure you gain confidence and work effectively throughout the course.

As a progression course, learners should have some independence to fully engage with both learning and practical activities.
Learning materials
Please wear appropriate clothing for the course, such as sturdy, close-fitting garments. Long hair should be tied back, and avoid loose clothing or wrist jewellery for safety. Safety glasses will be provided, but if you wear prescription glasses, please bring them along. All other materials and tools will be supplied. Consider wearing comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for workshop activities. If you have any specific needs, please inform us in advance.
What can learners progress onto next?
You may wish to progress onto the Small Business Ideas course starting in January 2026 after completing this course or other UMRA courses that support Community involvement or upskilling in maths and English, or continue your studies by enrolling in an accredited course at a college.
