Respite care and carer breaks
Caring for someone is rewarding, but it can also be tiring. Everyone needs time to rest and recharge. Respite care gives you a break while making sure the person you care for is safe and supported.
What is respite care?
Respite care means someone else looks after the person you care for so you can take a break. This could be for a few hours, a few days, or even a few weeks.
Taking a break is important for your health and wellbeing. It gives you time to relax, see friends, or enjoy hobbies. It also benefits the person you care for, as they can meet new people, try different activities, and enjoy a change of scenery.
Where can respite care happen?
- In the person’s own home
- In someone else’s home
- At a day opportunities centre
- In a residential or nursing home
Types of respite care:
- Planned short breaks: Booked in advance, either regularly or as a one-off.
- Emergency respite: If something unexpected happens, like illness or a family emergency.
- During office hours: Contact Staffordshire Cares
- Out of hours: Call the Emergency Duty Team
- Replacement care: When your usual carer is away, for example on holiday or in hospital.
