Respite care and carer breaks

What respite is, who can get it, how to apply, and the support available for carers

Who can get it and how to apply

You may be able to get respite care if you care for someone regularly and need a break. The person you care for must live in Staffordshire and have eligible care needs under the Care Act.

If you care for someone often, you have the right to a carer’s assessment. This looks at your needs, including your need for a break. The assessment can be carried out at the same time as the person you care for, or separately.

How to apply:

The first step is to contact Staffordshire Cares:

What happens next?

  1. Ask for a carer’s assessment.
  2. Your social care worker will help you agree a plan for the type of respite care that works best for you.
  3. If you are eligible, they will also discuss financial help.
