Support for unpaid carers

Find out if you are a carer, what a Carer’s Assessment is, how to get support, and how to plan for emergencies.

Get a Carer’s Assessment

A Carer’s Assessment is a free conversation about your needs as a carer. We look at how caring affects your life and what could help you carry on caring and stay well. You can be assessed on your own or together with the person you care for. We can do this by phone, face to face, or online.

Who can get one?

  • Any adult carer (18+) who looks after another adult
  • If the person you care for may also need help, you can ask for a joint assessment by calling Staffordshire Cares on 0300 111 8010.

Young carers and parent carers have their own assessment routes.

What happens in the assessment

We’ll talk with you about:

  • your caring role and day‑to‑day tasks
  • your health, work, education, family life and relationships
  • what would make things easier (e.g., equipment, training, breaks, peer support)
  • your plans for emergencies and the future

We may agree helpful actions such as:

  • referrals to services (for example, Occupational Therapy for equipment)
  • benefits and money advice
  • support from Staffordshire Together for Carers
  • information and advice tailored to your situation

Eligibility and the Care Act

We use the Care Act 2014 to check if your needs meet the national rules for funded support. We look at whether:

  1. your needs arise because you provide necessary care for an adult
  2. caring is having a negative effect on your wellbeing or day‑to‑day outcomes
  3. as a result, there is (or is likely to be) a significant impact on your wellbeing

You do not have to meet this threshold to use Staffordshire Together for Carers.

Costs

  • A Carer’s Assessment is free.
  • Support from Staffordshire Together for Carers is free.
  • If you are eligible as a carer, we may discuss a one‑off Carers Direct Payment to support your wellbeing (for example, towards a break or activity).
