Falls prevention
Why preventing falls matters
Falls are one of the most common causes of injury, especially as we get older. They can lead to loss of confidence, reduced independence, and even hospital stays. The good news is that most falls can be prevented with small changes and the right support.
Check your risk
- Take the NHS falls risk test to see if you’re at risk.
- If you’ve had a fall, always tell your GP. Many causes can be treated or corrected.
Stay active and strong
- Regular movement helps improve balance and strength.
- Watch Age UK’s video on How to reduce your risk of falling Age UK for practical tips.
- Walking, gentle stretching, or chair-based exercises can make a big difference.
Make your home safer
- Remove trip hazards like loose rugs and clutter.
- Improve lighting, especially on stairs and hallways.
- Fit grab rails in bathrooms and near steps.
- Consider motion-sensor night lights for safe movement at night.
