Housing options
Finding the right place to live is important for staying safe, comfortable, and independent as you get older or if you have additional needs. Staffordshire offers a range of housing choices and support to help you live well.
Staying safe at home:
You can get help to stay in your own home for longer. Local services and equipment, such as grab rails, easy-to-use heating controls, and daily living aids, can make everyday tasks easier.

Specialist housing options:
If your current home isn’t suitable, there are several types of specialist accommodation:
- Age-exclusive housing: Purpose-built flats for people aged 55+, with features to support independence. No on-site manager, usually available to rent or buy.
- Sheltered housing: Flats or bungalows with emergency call systems, communal spaces, and daytime managers or wardens. Available through councils or housing associations.
- Extra care housing: Flats with 24-hour access to care and support, plus communal facilities and activities. Suitable for a range of care needs.
- Supported living: Shared homes for younger adults with disabilities, offering support staff and some communal facilities.
Things to consider:
- What care and support do you want now and in the future?
- Can you afford the costs (rent, service charges, bills)?
- Is the location close to your GP, shops, and public transport?
- You don’t have to move into a care home, there are many options to help you stay independent.
