If you can't register the birth yourself

In most cases, a parent will register the birth of their baby. However, if neither parent is able to attend due to exceptional circumstances, someone else may be able to register the birth on your behalf.

The registrar will decide who can do this, based on who is best placed to provide the required information.

This could be:

  • The occupier of the house or hospital where the baby was born
  • Someone who was present at the birth
  • A person responsible for the child (for example, a legal guardian)

If you think you may need someone else to register the birth, please contact the registrar’s office as soon as possible. They will advise you on what to do next.
