Stay warm and safe

Tips to keep your home at a healthy temperature, save energy and stay safe when it’s cold.

Keep your home warm

  • If you’re over 65, have reduced mobility or a heart/lung condition, try to heat your home to at least 18°C. Slightly over 18°C can be good for your health.
  • Close curtains at dusk to keep heat in; don’t leave bedroom windows open on cold nights.
  • Use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket (not both together).

Save energy and improve efficiency

  • Check for draughts around doors and windows and close internal doors to keep heat in.
  • Layer up with warm clothing and use lap blankets when sitting for long periods.
  • If you don’t have central heating, you may be eligible for help through Staffordshire Warmer Homes (including first‑time central heating in some cases). Follow the link to check your eligibility.

Stay safe indoors

  • Test smoke alarms regularly.
  • If you use gas, wood or coal appliances, ensure they’re serviced and consider a carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Keep paths and steps clear and well‑lit to reduce slips.
