Overview
Staffordshire County Council highways works
We manage many types of roadworks, from planned projects to emergency repairs.
Our programmes page lists upcoming works, including:
- Large improvement projects
- Routine maintenance (like gully emptying and grass cutting)
- Surface treatments for roads
Non-county council works (third party works)
Third-party works include activities by National Highways on motorways and trunk roads in Staffordshire. Other works are usually done by utility companies or developers, who aim to reduce disruption for communities.
Essential services like gas, water, electricity, and telecoms need regular maintenance and upgrades. Most of this equipment is under public roads, so some traffic disruption is unavoidable even with well-managed works.
Utility companies have a legal right to work on the highway to keep services running. They do not need permission from the highway authority because their licence comes from the Secretary of State. They also answer to regulators like OFWAT and the DWI.
These companies are responsible for completing their works and managing traffic safely. For this reason, we encourage the public to send feedback directly to the company doing the work.
Network management
There is a high demand for utility works, developer works, and events on Staffordshire’s roads, with over 40,000 planned activities each year. This is partly due to major investment in housing and business growth.
Our network management team works closely with partners who provide essential services, support development, and run community events. We aim to coordinate all these activities so they cause the least disruption for road users.
