Looked after children

If a child is in the care of a local authority, you must complete the LAC In-Year Application Form and return it to your preferred school. Please include:

  • a copy of the latest Personal Education Plan (PEP)
  • any additional information relevant to the child’s education placement

Before completing the form, read the important notes on the first page.

If you’ve already submitted an application and do not receive a response within 15 school days, contact the school directly and request a written reply.

If your application is refused, you have a right to appeal.

Important information:

  • Local authorities can direct maintained schools to admit a looked-after child.
  • For academies, the Secretary of State has the power to direct admission. Local authorities can request this if they believe an academy best meets the child’s needs and the academy refuses to admit.
  • If specialist provision is needed outside a mainstream school or PRU, please refer to the SEND Local Offer for details on available options.
  • If a local authority places a child in Staffordshire from outside the area, they must complete the Out-of-Area Placement Form to notify Staffordshire of the placement.
