Moving from overseas

Please refer to the latest guidance from the Department for Education.

If you are an overseas national entering the UK and wish to apply for a state-funded school, you must check that:

  • You have a right of abode in the UK, or
  • The conditions of their visa allow your child to attend a state-funded school.

It is the parent’s responsibility to confirm this before applying for a school place.

If you will be living in a property you own

If you are moving back into a property you already own, we will need evidence of this.

This may include proof of ownership and confirmation that the property will be available for your family to live in before the expected admission date.

If you will be living in a rented property

You’ll need to provide a rental agreement and proof that the property will be available before the school start date.

If you cannot provide this documentation, your application will be assessed using your current overseas address. If the school is oversubscribed, it’s unlikely a place will be offered.

In this case, you will have a right of appeal, but your child will not be offered an alternative school until you are resident in the UK.

What happens after you apply

Your application will be processed based on the information you provide.

If a place is offered before you arrive, your child must take up the place by the date stated in the offer letter. If not, the offer may be withdrawn.

For applications outside the normal entry year, apply around six weeks before the place is needed so we can assess availability.

Children recently arrived in the UK

If your child has arrived in the UK and is living in Staffordshire without a school place, you’ll need to complete an in year application and send it to your preferred school.
