Request a financial assessment for adult social care

This guide explains how to request a financial assessment, what documents you’ll need, and the steps involved. We’ll show you when to ask for one, how to tell us you’d like an assessment, and what happens next.

A financial assessment looks at your income, savings and some expenses to work out your weekly contribution for care and support. We follow national rules under the Care Act and our local charging policy.

Ask for a financial assessment if:

  • you’ve had (or are booking) a care and support assessment and may need ongoing care
  • you want to check if the council can help with your care costs
  • you currently pay the full cost and your savings are going down

How it works (at a glance):

  1. Request an assessment (you or someone you trust can contact us).
  2. Complete and return the form (we can help by phone or face‑to‑face).
  3. We confirm your contribution and, if you’re eligible, when council funding can start.
  4. Tell us about any changes to your income, savings or circumstances.

If you need help to complete the form, an interpreter, translated or easy read information, or other reasonable adjustments, just ask.

If you arrange your own care and pay the full cost, we can still advise and help you plan support. If you ask us to arrange non‑residential care on your behalf, an administration fee applies.

  1. Check if you need a financial assessment

Find out what a financial assessment is and when to ask for one.

  2. Request a financial assessment

Tell us you’d like a financial assessment — we can take details from you or someone you trust.

  3. Get your documents ready

Gather recent statements and details of your income, savings and regular costs.

  4. We review your information and confirm your contribution

We calculate what you pay and what the council will pay, then tell you when any funding can start.

  5. If you pay the full cost (self‑funding)

We can still advise and help you plan support. If we arrange non‑residential care for you, administration fees apply.

  6. Get support and find related information

Ask for help to complete the form and read more about costs, funding and other support.
